I’m going to admit that as we get older, we are forced to do things we do not want to do. We have to pay bills and our dreams do not always provide the paycheck for that. So what do the majority of us do? We settle. It totally sucks, but it’s true. I do not settle. I do not give up on my dreams, but let’s be real for two seconds: you have to pay your bills and you have to eat. Isn’t that the most annoying thing about being an adult? The responsibility of keeping yourself going while you work on the dream, because if you die from starvation or end up in jail from unpaid bills, that would definitely push that dream further back.

That seems to be the way it works and then let’s not forget about the naysayers and haters. OMG! Does that ever get on your last nerve? Sure it does, but you must press on and let that stuff fade with the wind.

I’m very aware that there are certain things I’ve been taking for granted as an artist. Number one, I have been assuming that I can just get enough exposure online and bam, like magic, I’ll be someone. Sure to most of you that goes without saying but Facebook and Twitter are like drugs and I was being naive. I was oblivious that promoting yourself online could only get you so far. Number two, I now must establish real life contacts and friends who enjoy the things I do and learn from them.

So here’s my plan. To start a meetup.com group in Madison who focuses on the things that I’m focusing on. I joined meetup.com hoping that there was already some sort of group that was into art, performance art, music, vlogging, and etc. There isn’t that kind of group, so I’m starting the group and hope to have a meeting sometime next month. The idea of the group is to have artists come together with one common goal: help me, help you, and help us. A place where people can come together and be themselves and even receive constructive criticism of their works to better their art forms. A place where everyone helps each other with cross promoting and volunteering for each other’s projects. And the goal is in one year’s time, we, as a group, would have collected an array of art that we can showcase as one group in a gallery/festival.

Now this may seem a bit familiar because I blogged about something like this about a year and a half ago. However, I did not know how to organize such a thing until now. I know that if there is group of people who love to create, they should come together and get that job done.

CONCEPT:

The story is set in both present time and future. Andy Warhol is known to have died in 1987, but him and his fellow artists found a way to travel to the future. Warhol returns to the past to give a fellow artist, Joey Broyles, a taste of the future. Joey is resistant and claims that Warhol is a ghost, but quickly discovers that Warhol is very much alive and is about to give him a ride on his spaceship to the future. In the future, Warhol shows Joey his kingdom: Warhol City, and the love affair begins. SUPERSTAR BOOTHS. SILVER FACTORY LOUNGE, art gallery club. RAY GUNS AND ART! And of course DRAG QUEENS and PHOTOSHOOTS!

What’s needed for the production?

Costumes are a fundamental part of a video like this. The largest scene will be a club scene where we’ll have a handful of people dressed as Warhol characters from his days in the factory. I’ll be hiring a local costumer and is familiar with this future/retro 1960s look. We’ll search through local thrift shops as well as dealing a local vintage clothing dealer, VicMizzy. We will also need to purchase some wigs.

Props on a Budget are a specialty of mine, but only so many things can be made from the random supplies in my recycle bin. I’ll be creating 1950 style ray guns for the Dueling GoGo Dancers and some fancy tools and gadgets for Warhol. I will need to purchase some supplies: glue, spray paint, LED light kits, and lots of tin foil and other shiny silver items.

Lighting is especially important for a video with a range of special effects. Since I don’t own a full lighting kit, we’ll need to rent one.

Sets that either need to be built or local places that will need to be transformed into the future have already been scouted out. We’ll need a variety of set dressings to create each of our sets. We need to build the inside of the control room for Warhol’s spaceship, and turn a garage into an exclusive club with plexiglass, poles, and a stage for the GoGo Dancers and Marilyn Monroe. Large pieces of wood, cardboard, foam board, paint, and addition lighting will be needed as well to finish building the small-scale model of Warhol City.

Arts & Graphics I will need a little money to purchase physical prints, silkscreens and silkscreen ink to create additional set pieces.

The Actors & Crew The actors and crew are the most valuable people and crucial to this video. The actors will be compensated for their time and effort.

Food. We’ll need to feed all these lovely people for at least three shoots. So don’t let these people starve or they are liable to eat me and we don’t want that! Ha ha!

My song is titled Do Something Stupid and it’s about lots of different things. I have a lot of frustration from not getting much recognition from the YouTube audience and the videos that do well I find kind of stupid. Of course, to each his own. But how do some of these terrible videos have millions of views? One thing a lot of the popular YouTube videos have in common, short in length, usually about one or two minutes long. The second thing a lot of them have in common is display of human stupidity and most of the time I don’t enjoy those videos. But there’s a huge market for it, so I respect them for that. And again I’m sure lots of people think things like this about my videos: “These videos are stupid.” With modern technology people can now pay for Bots, which are programs/users that figure out the YouTube system and cheat the video views to get the user millions of views. Unfair? Yep, but then again so is life.

Another thing Do Something Stupid talks about is past YouTube videos that went viral like the sneezing panda video and many videos that have thumbnails of women’s breasts. Mostly, Do Something Stupid is just a silly song with a lot of passionate thoughts thrown in the mix. The video itself recognizes other stupid things that the human race and some rich celebrities do. Silly boys taking pictures of their abs in a mirror and then putting that up as a profile picture on Facebook/Twitter etc. Grown men taking pictures of their private parts and texting/sexting them to people that might show the world, especially if you are Brett Favre. And some more ridiculous stuff I thought someone rather perverted would try. Hopefully the message is clear that if you want to get famous on YouTube do something stupid, but keep it short.

I was very happy that GloZell, a YouTuber, had an opportunity for me to enter my talent into her contest. With the millions of people who watch her video, I’m not certain if my video will get any attention, but either way I’m very proud of what I accomplished.

If only I could one up some of these YouTubers with a better camera, because shooting in 480p, is just not cutting it with all the other competition out there. I know I have an audience out there and I’m happy to entertain them. But you know I wouldn’t be human if I didn’t want to better myself and get some more viewership and subscribers. One of the big reasons YouTube denied me for partnership. I don’t really want a partnership as much as I’d just like that following. Wouldn’t be great to make videos for the masses? Dare to dream!

I have something called the January Blues. I’m not sure if this is a real thing, but once a year I go through it. Honestly, I get completely depressed and it’s nothing that medication will resolve, just a rut that I go through. It’s funny but in years passed, if I look back, my creativity always comes to a halt. I tend to waste most of my January reflecting and not a lot of time creating. It’s the month where I look at what I’ve done and realize I’m a year older and haven’t accomplished all I wanted to in the year before.

Now the January Blues isn’t a depression over age thing, just a depression over feeling unaccomplished. Once I take the time and look back at all the things I did the year before, I think that’s pretty good, but I can do better this year. With that being said, I think December should be cancelled altogether. Christmas makes me spend too much money and wastes a lot of my energy. I think this year I’d prefer no presents, just time spent together, and a dinner of some sort. And what a perfect segue into New Year’s Resolutions!

I don’t think one should have New Year’s Resolutions, so let’s just call them resolutions. I think you should have a long list of resolutions because some of them will be broken. One thing I’m rather proud of from last year’s list is that I haven’t had a Pepsi (my choice drug) in a year. Here’s my list:

-Lose 30 lbs.
-Stop drinking all soda includes orange and ginger ale
-Exercise 2 times a week
-Make videos every week
-Get 100 more subscribers on YouTube
-Make 2 music videos
-Finish The Shanikwa Shanikwa Movie
-Complete the silhouette silkscreens
-Have a small art gallery showing
-When I scrawl essays onto paper, type them and share them on the blog!
-Keep drinking green tea
-Enter your documentary into the YouTube contest
-Learn to bake my own bread and do it well
-Earn $100 in monetization from Google Adsense (if only, ha ha)
-Make more tutorial videos
-make short films
-start writing more
-Complain less

NBC Cancels The Playboy Club :0(

I’m so over these large groups of parents who deem what is appropriate for me to watch on my television. It is your responsibility to monitor what your children can and cannot watch. Perhaps living in a bomb shelter would be better for YOU PEOPLE! At least if you lived in a bomb shelter you could quite literally shelter your children! Regardless though, Playboy magazine may be controversial but for me this show was hardly controversial. Regardless, if you’ve watched the show or not, you would find a drama placed in the 1960s during the era of The Playboy Club. The show followed the lives of The Playboy Bunnies, essentially waitresses in sexy bunny suits, (think a classier HOOTERS) on their journey. It was done fairly tasteful and had a murder mystery plot twist, exciting. Great cast. Great show. And even if not historically accurate, it had historical elements and was interesting to watch. But let’s face it, some tight-wadded-mother was upset with her husband for subscribing to Playboy. This same tight-wadded-mother was shocked to discover NBC was airing PORNOGRAPHY. She went out of her way to start some foolish complaint and found strength in numbers with Parents Television Council. Now this was probably a show she didn’t even take the time to watch!

And then NBC, big corporation, was intimidated by the PTC? I’m sorry, are we still living in the 1950s/1960s, apparently until the day censorship is over. America the conservative. Essentially if you want to be thought provoking you can’t do it on T.V. And then the line about the ratings not being good enough? You’ve probably heard me preach about this before but why are people still looking at real TV ratings? We do live in a world where people use a thing called DVRs, TiVo, reruns online, and iTunes to watch their show later. But if it doesn’t start with a bang, then let’s throw it away, never mind the amount of money we wasted on the production. What’s a few million? Dear Hollywood, Try to be more green with your green! I say the heck with TV and let’s move it to the internet. Oh wait those angry creeps would probably use their strength in numbers and destroy the internet. Just wait it’s coming.

I propose a new group called Protection From Over Censoring Television Council where essentially every network is protected by all these crazy groups like the PTC, OneMillionMoms, and whatever other Tipper Gore inspired censorship group. In essence this dream team would ensure quality control of over censoring and destroying potential hit shows in the future. But enough dreaming! Thanks to all these fools I will never know what happens with these characters, don’t worry I’ll get over it, in about 10 years. Thanks jerks!
