I’m trying to teach myself the art of silk screen printing. This is a series blog about the obstacles, the lessons, the knowledge and the skills I hope to possess by the end of my journey. Take what you will out of this and to other accomplished screen printers feel free to share your wealth of knowledge on the subject.

Previous entry: Part One

Since the last entry I’ve accomplished several new things: screen printing two different designs, discovering what mistakes incurred using the screen filler and drawing fluid, and making a better screen. Below are the successful prints I made from the haphazard Andy Warhol character silk screen.

Notice the hair does not print, along with the lips and nose.

As you may have noticed Andy’s hair does not print in full nor does his hair, eyes, lips, nose. The reason for this goes back to the mistake I made when applying the screen filler and drawing fluid. Originally I thought the the trouble started from my actual sketch from pencil to the screen, but I was wrong. (I do encourage you not to press hard when applying your sketch or tracing on the screen.) Let’s review where I went wrong. When painting with the drawing fluid make sure that the fluid fills into the screen. You can check by holding your screen in front of a light source. If you see little pinholes go back and lightly fill those in. I say lightly because when you put the drawing fluid on too thick you may have trouble when applying the screen filler. In my case I painted too lightly on some sections like the lips and too thick in other sections such as the eyes.

Now onto the next part where I went wrong: too much screen filler! Now the screen I’m using comes in a kit made by Speedball which you can find at your local art shop or online shopping. I have the 10 x 14 screen and so far it has been good to me. When preparing the application of your screen filler don’t be afraid to apply a large line of filler horizontally above your design, if you cut yourself short I can tell you what happens. When you take your squeegee and slide it vertically down over your design you are to do one swipe and one swipe only to cover your design! Try not to miss a section, swiping it a second time risks washing out your design. Which is exactly what happened to me my first time.

The ghostly image. The haze!

Reclaiming your one and only screen was a pain and I’m not going to lie. First of all nowhere in my awesome book or slew of bookmarked websites was there an explanation on how to reclaim your silk screen. After some hard core research I found some suggestions. Get a spray bottle and some bleach. Fill the bottle with one part bleach and two parts water. Get your screen wet with water and then spray the screen with your bleach solution. Let it soak for five minutes and then agitate with a nylon scrub brush, do this on both sides. Then blast the screen with your high pressure hose in a downward position. Soak again and repeat. Honestly I did not like doing it this way, so I’ll let you know that I’m looking to buy some sprays that with eat away at the emulsion a little faster next time. I did find this helpful video that gave me the idea… Helpful video.

So after I removed the Andy stencil and all its glory I was annoyed to still see him stuck on my screen. Now this is called haze and there is a product out there that removes the haze from your screen. I’m looking to buy it myself later this year: Enviro Haze Remover. However, it’s just a haze and will not interfere with your next design. As long as you can see through the other side I wouldn’t worry about it.

With my next design I was more prepared and took into consideration all the mistakes I made. I’m very happy to report that this next design washed through perfectly but that doesn’t mean I didn’t discover a whole new set of mistakes. Don’t worry this is an awesome hands on learning process that gets me away from long hours in front a computer screen!

As I said, all things went through fine but just wait until I got clever with where I put the ink. Traditionally just as you put the screen filler horizontally above your design, you also do the same with your ink. Don’t get too creative unless you are looking to make unwanted errors. As I was printing I noticed that I was losing ink down by the words “fashion icon.” I decided to put some ink in between the lips and the words as an extra buffer. Well once the swipe was complete I got a big shadow of lips and letters as pictured below:

Notice the middle print. Very thick, almost shadow like.

Now remember, in between prints, you should run your squeegee over the screen lightly in order to properly flood the screen, otherwise the ink will dry inside the screen.

When I’m printing I feel as though I don’t get enough time before the screen is just done doing its job. I was reading my awesome book, which I highly recommend: Printing by Hand: A Modern Guide to Printing with Handmade Stamps, Stencils, and Silk Screens by Lena Corwin, and it says to use Ink Retarder. Ink Retarder prolongs the drying process and gives you more work time. Next print I’ll totally be prepared, keep those fingers crossed!

I’m sure if you are not inside the mind of Joey Broyles (me) you may think, “Gee he has so many unfinished projects.” Well I’m all about multi-tasking and doing several things at once, the truth is my mind is so crazy with ideas that I am a slave to my mind.

Learning how to screen print has been a huge learning curve for me. As of right now I have not actually applied ink to anything but have made my first screen. Unfortunately the drawing fluid has not been ideal in this situation. Below is the photo of my screen before I washed out the fluid.

Everything seems to be fine. Drawing fluid applied first and dry. Screen filler emulsion fluid applied and dry. All things dried horizontally for at least 4 hours in between. However, this is a trial and error process and because it’s my first screen let me tell you the variables that will describe the problems that have already incurred.

First I may have drew my image too dark with a soft lead pencil. Second I may have not applied enough drawing fluid to the screen. Third I did more than one swipe of screen filler which can wash out the drawing fluid. The screen was washed out with cold water. Does it matter that every other tutorial I read said warm water and I used cold? I don’t know for sure until someone fills me in. I’ve already learned how not to do several things and so this will make me better for my next turn at it.

My screen has been washed out in some places, but not so well in other places. His eyes are completely gone. Some of his hair, even after using a tooth brush to scrub some filler off, did not come through in all places. Not all of his chin washed through and honestly I won’t know for sure how bad it is until I do a test print. Since I’ve never done the ink part, I need to do it even though I know the print will be less than impressive. Again this is all trial and error being it’s my first time.

The next entry I will show you what my first screen looked like and what the prints were like. Maybe between you and me we can figure this out and get better as we go along. Once I’ve got this down I’d like to move on to the photo emulsion, but let’s climb one mountain at a time.

This is my new intro to the new version of Make Me Famous on YouTube, which will coincide with this blog! Stay tuned! Very exciting! :)

Aug 03

The GOAL: In one year’s time my friends and I will be opening at some gallery, at some time, late next year. The theme of this gallery is: I AM FAMOUS, depicting all aspects of fame, literally and abstract, in a mixed media format. Fashion meets art meets something yet to be discovered. Tabloids, Warholisms, and anything else that depicts this world where we are obsessed with FAME. Being that we are fameaholics I see this as a great opportunity to take a journey and see where we go. This is an ideal opportunity to collaborate, create, and spread the word about this century’s new factory.

If you want to get involved with this project and live near Madison, WI please reply to this post.

Also looking for models to pose for photos and possibly involve them in a larger project for next year. Let us know.

I am by nature sometimes an angry, complaining, little brat. I am aware of this and so I try to rise above it. I fail several times a week at this task but I truly do not wish harm on anyone other than the regular earwig that now stalks me in my home (another story, another blog et vlog). Anyway I was doing my daily narcissism check on YouTube when I stumbled across today’s Featured video: Introducing NEW YouTube Mobile!

YouTube has a new and improved mobile site for your cell phone, cool, and I thought I’d watch this guy’s review. It was a fine review and very informative. Now per usual YouTube commentators you have the cyber bullies leaving stupid comments like “Is this guy gay?” “You’re video is gay” “Stop shaking the phone fagot” and so on. If you know me I get really dramatic and angry when this happens to my videos! Now this lucky guy who gets featured on YouTube is subject to the same garbage. What is it in our nature that we feel that we can just be so evil to anybody? YouTube is an amazing place where you can share and express your creativity to the fullest and sadly it is also the place where people go to be bullies! And there is no other word for it!

These bullies rule the world with their negativity from comments like “this is so gay” to “you suck” and my favorite “Dude, you have too much time on your hands.” Let’s be frank that if you took the time to Google their user names you will find a trail of negative comments showcasing that they are doing this to a lot of other YouTube users. Anonymity is the YouTube Bully’s best friend and it gives them this power to do and say whatever they want online.

In one instance, I bullied the bullier a few years ago. He had left negative comments about my video and so I look him up, found his trail, dedicated a website to him, and sent all his harassed users this website where they could express how they felt. I was into Heath Ledger’s Joker and felt like Robin Hood stealing from the rich and giving to the poor using his same tactics against him. Later the video was taken down by Warner Brother’s but all in all I did not feel better about the situation. I bullied the bullier thus becoming the thing I hate.

Now back to this video Introducing NEW YouTube Mobile!. I was pretty upset with the outcome of many users writing nasty things to this nice guy and figured this time instead of making a big scene I’d just write the person being bullied. In the letter I pretty much said that his video was good and I liked it and it didn’t matter to me if he was “straight, gay, or an alien.” I sent this guy a letter of encouragement because in truth when I get attacked that’s all I want is one person to say, “I liked your video.” Everyone deserves a chance to hear that.

Here’s the final word to those YouTube bullies who enjoy their anonymity a little too much. You call us “gay” and you tell us how much we “suck” and how we have too much time on our hands. Well in about 10 minutes I can find your YouTube history and count the 30 videos you watched today. And it seems to me that you, dude, have too much time on your hands!

Touché, touché, sashay, away!

Anyone who is anyone has a factory or a place to create their art, their movies, and in essence, themselves. Andy Warhol had one and I find that if you surround yourself with other creative people you can be more creative. To surround myself with other creative friends will inspire and push me further and further. So I have made a point to turn my garage into a artist’s home. If you are a friend and like to create come on over…

The Factory

Another factory is born.

Current projects:

Pony: A film that is a mind thriller.

Mastering Claymation: Learning the art of stop-motion, claymation and animation.

Graphic Art: Enlarging my graphics into sketches on to canvas.

And much more. Bring your own project and we’ll just create.

It’s been a year since I found a way to submit my song If U Luv Me (Google Me) on iTunes. It was fairly simple to do, but selling it, has been a task in itself. Let’s just say it’s not a popular song on the radio and wasn’t written for that intention. Why was it written? Self love, self promotion, and to satire pop culture and the Gossip Queen himself Perez Hilton. It’s had some laughs and it’s had it’s criticisms, but all in all, it’s just a fun silly song.

When I started this blog last year I was determined to “dethrone” and conquer Perez Hilton’s spot in Pop culture because I was jealous. To be honest, I don’t want his job and I don’t want to spout like opinions and then get myself in trouble with The Black Eyed Peas. I am about drama, but I’m not about being the one to cause the drama. I do not renounce my opinion that I think Perez was in the wrong for calling will.i.am gay. That whole Toronto club situation and the way all parties handled it was wrong. But I’m over it.

What does that mean for Google Me? Nothing, really. I still feel strongly that it is a fun song, is it a hit sensation? No, and it never has to be because I made it for me. I think it’s funny and absurd and weird and it holds a special place in my heart. Above all I love the music video. As of today it’s been viewed 26,000 times and that’s an accomplishment for a non-celebrity status, but seriously make me famous! LOL!

With that being said, “Happy Birthday ‘Google Me’!”

Americans in general take the freedoms we have for granted. We can shoot our mouths off and say what we’d like because we have freedom of speech. We can vote. And for the most part there are laws that say we are all equal. However when it comes to free giveaways we take free for granted.

Currently, I work in the retail business and as part of our advertisement with a local radio station we’ve been giving out free tickets for swimming. The point of the free giveaway is for us to introduce new customers to our store and give them something free in exchange for coming in. Let me tell you the word free has turned into the word greed.

First example, customer comes in and receives their four free tickets and then they have the nerve to ask for more. I explain that each customer is allowed the standard free four pack of tickets. He of course thinks that’s not fair because he has a large family of 20. Perhaps he should invite five adult representatives from the family to collect 20 tickets. Now if I were to give into his demands then he’d pass that information on to his friends. Word of mouth travels fast and soon I’d have to deal with that and it’s just not fair to the other customers.

Second example, customer brings entire family in and tries to pass them off as friends or “that’s not my daughter, she’s here for her family.” First of all there is something called a family resemblance and that girl who is not your daughter sure has a lot of your facial features and her dad’s eyes. So please don’t come in here and lie to me. I really feel that when it comes to something free people have no pride. I have no problem if she came in the following week to pickup another set, but don’t use your children to score more free tickets.

The best part about this whole free swimming thing is it’s one day only. At the rate we’ve been giving these tickets out, which consequently we are out of, I don’t believe the water to people ratio is in anyone’s favor. I’m imagining this mass of skin covering the water and it totally reminds me of something out of What Dreams May Come with Robin Williams. Remember the scene when Williams has to go down to hell to find his wife and there is this huge mass of bodies. Well that’s what it’s going to be like that day for sure!

Good luck people and happy swimming!

So today I spent my day sitting at the piano working on my song ‘Sorry’ and I’m happy with a lot of the writing I have accomplished. Starting to find the Chorus and that’s so cool finding the words after months of just a dead end. Here’s my little Vlog about it from YouTube. Please subscribe to my channel if you like what you see Joey’s YouTube Channel.

(Watch video here.)

In other news if you haven’t bought the Eclipse Soundtrack, you must! I’m so addicted, even if you never intend on watching the movie or care about the Twilight saga. I feel very strongly about how amazing this album is on its own. You’ve got so many indie artists about to take off. Key tracks that I dig a lot right now: Heavy In Your Arms by Florence + The Machine, My Love by Sia, and What Part of Forever by Cee Lo Green. Listen please!

So you may have noticed my video above and well I scored a RCA EZ1000 Small Wonder from my credit card rewards and it’s a lot of fun. Of course I still use my other video camera, but this one fits in your pocket and is perfect for those on the go vloggers or catching that thing while you are out. Make sure you are in a well lit area and I wouldn’t recommend zooming because there’s a bit of clicking sound but still great for being free! I think it retails at like $99.

Well gotta go! Make me famous kids! If U Luv Me (Google Me) is now at 22,000 views, somebody’s doing there job for sure!

Never was there a more beautiful or more tender kind than that of Bonnie Bonneville. She lived a good life, until she decided to take her own life on that fateful day of, just yesterday, June 11, 2010. Had she waited a few more days we could’ve gone to the car shop together as we had for the last six years. Remember the good times Bonnie, always remember the good times.
